My Approach & Theories

Although my approach is tailored fit to meet your unique needs, I will draw upon my background in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Attachment Theory while using a Strength-Based, Client Centred Approach. My goal is to provide you an emotionally safe place where you can speak freely about what your current stressors are.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) helps clients understand and re-structure thoughts that influence our behaviours. During the course of treatment, people realize how to identify and change destructive thought patterns that do not serve them well. Although we can’t control every aspect of the world around us, we can control how we interpret and deal with things in our environment.  Change is directed at realizing values and achieving goals.

Attachment Theory

Attachment Theory is focused on the connections and relationships between people, particularly long term relationships. In its simplest form, attachment is the emotional bond we have to another person. The early bonds that we create have a tremendous impact on it us later in life.

Attachment Theory starts with the belief that to thrive emotionally, children need a close continuous caregiving relationship. Our joint work will be to review your current working model of yourself and others, to help understand your attachment style and how this is impacting your current functioning and relationships.

Strength-Based Counselling

This approach looks at the strengths that an individual already brings to a problem or crisis. This is a client-led process which assumes that people have many skills, abilities, values, commitments, beliefs and competencies that will assist them to change their relationship with the problems influencing their lives.

Narrative Therapy

It’s human nature to make sense of our experiences through the stories we tell, but it’s how we tell our stories that can be very revealing as well as which pieces of information we tend to focus on. These stories shape people’s perspectives of their lives, histories, and futures. Working with a counsellor with a skilled ear for how you tell your stories can help you see your problems in a new light. Feel more confident, capable, and at ease by reframing your perspective and understanding your problems and yourself in a whole new way. Understanding how problem stories shape your perspective can prepare you to re-write these stories to serve you better.

EMDR

(Eye Movement and Desensitization and Reprocessing)

EMDR treatment is a form of adaptive information processing which may help the brain unblock maladaptive material. Studies indicate that EMDR is effective in the treatment of anxiety, panic attack, post- traumatic stress symptoms (such as intrusive thoughts, nightmares, and flashbacks), depression, phobias and other traumatic experiences.

As an EMDR trained counsellor, I offer EMDR for children, youth, and adults.

Every client and problem circumstance will favour different skills. And each situation requires counsellors to know how to use these skills, as well as when to use them and when to refrain from using them. I will customize my approach to fit your needs.
